Party-starting Sydney 4-piece Daily Meds are the winners of our Come Together competition and will be joining the massive lineup at the Sydney Luna Park Big Top this Saturday June 11.
Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
We are a 4 piece hip-hop crew from Sydney, rocking some cutting edge sounds with underground content.. 'getting your mind ticking and arse moving' as we like to say. In the beginning, P.Smurf and Mikoen hit me up to play guitar in a brand new funky-jazzy live hip hop band called ‘Daily Meds’, also with Billie Rose singing and bass player Lampshade. I was chopping up drum breaks for us to to play over, but I was also making dirty electronica-inspired hip hop beats on the side.. over time we just started incorporating these sounds more and more, to the point now where our new material is not really jazzy or funky at all, but dirty and glitchy.
You’re the winners of our Come Together competition and will be playing the Sydney Luna Park Big Top this Saturday June 11. What can the Come Together masses expect from the Daily Meds live show?
We are definitely going to try and get the crowd amped... so expect big beats, 2 dudes spitting big raps and double-time flows, a killer female MC and loads of hype! We only have a short set, so were gonna be cramming in as much as you can take!
What are your earliest memories of Australian hip hop? How does that compare to your current Australian hip hop favourites?
Hearing ‘Nosebleed section’ in the early years of high-school was the first time I head ‘aus hip-hop’, it’s still such a classic tune - I think that track still stands up among whats happening in the scene at the moment....however there are some crews out there really upping the game at the moment in terms of technical skills, guys like Dialectrix and Mantra are setting the bar higher and higher.
Tell us about the bands, producers and people in the Sydney music community that inspire you.
For me, first and foremost the Big Village roster, it’s more than just a record label - but almost like a big crew - Tuka, Loose Change, Reverse Polarities and True-Vibenation. We have all been playing together for years in the Sydney hip hop game, we have our own little scene going on which has some very nice vibes flowing around, and honestly right now I don’t have to look to hard to find some inspiration.
What’s coming up in 2011?
A full length Daily Meds album! Me, P. Smurf and Mikoen are all living together in a shambolic dank warehouse, writing tunes non-stop. It’s coming out in November 2011 through Big Village records and I can’t wait - it’s going to be far from a lot of whats floating around at the moment....We will also be touring the east coast at the end of the year! Also Big Village has just released a compilation album ‘Big Things Volume One’, which we have a track on, I have quite a few beats on it, Mikoen and P.Smurf have solo tracks as well... were gonna be launching it in Sydney at Tone nightclub on the 25th of June!
