Golden Vessel

Brisbane, QLD

Brisbane producer Golden Vessel has got us swooning over his silky smooth production, fluttery synths and choice collaborations.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I bought a synth when I was fourteen and started a band with some mates. We played one show and then called it quits and because I'd just spent all my pocket money on the synth, I decided I better keep making music. I bought Ableton and started making really amateur Breakbot-ish piano funk but slowly evolved to making chill electronic when I discovered artists such as Toro Y Moi, Caribou, SBTRKT, Chet Faker and Flume. I just worked at it for a couple of years and then started the Golden Vessel when I was 16

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
I get really inspired by sound, whether that's hearing other artists or mucking around on Ableton and coming up with new sounds or hearing something cool on the street and recording it on my iphone.

What can punters expect from a Golden Vessel live show?
I perform live with my mate Connor (aka Whisperer - another Unearthed artist) and so he covers most of the vocal parts and guitar and I play a lot of keys / percussion. I'm also currently making some custom midi controllers with a friend so I'll start to roll them out on stage sometime soon too. I really love live shows that are unexpected and take twists and turns that aren't present on the EP, so I try and pursue that same experience with my live set.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
I think it was from Caleb Hodges from Art of Sleeping who told me two years ago to take my time with releasing music and not to rush anything when I was really eager to drop a lot of average content. That advice just helped me to take a step back and continually work at my craft.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
GOVS - Let's Go! I love this guy and this songs super uplifting and fun

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
Cousin Tony's Brand New Firebird - Melbourne Bitter. I just discovered these guys on Unearthed and can't stop playing this song on repeat.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
Cosmo's Midnight - Walk With Me (feat. Kučka)

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
On the weekend I went and saw my mates Ivey and Tiny Little Houses then popped over and caught UV Boi. Both shows were A-grade.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Brisbane music community that inspire you.
Brisbane has an awesome little hub of people extremely passionate about music that help each other out and build each other up. Especially my boys cln and Feki have really stretched and encouraged me as a musician as well as my fam OK Badlands, Whisperer and Wash who all constantly help each other out in every way possible.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?
So my 'Before Sleep' EP is out in June and I'm doing a little Aus tour so keep an eye out for that. I'm also doing a fair bit of production work for some artists in Brisbane. I'm especially excited for the new OK Badlands EP that I'm producing. It's gonna be a fun year.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

I make indie/pop music that kinda feels like you’re sinking and soaring at the same time. My sound has developed pretty naturally over the last couple of years through writing A LOT and learning about production. I’ve also loved collaborating and right now I’m loving writing to a beat!

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

It’s generally from those around me! Sometimes a friend can tell me a cool story, or I’ve been through something myself. I’m jotting down lyrics constantly because my brain never switches off from that stuff.

What can punters expect from an Essie Holt live show?

Lots of light and shade. I like to bring people up and then take them straight back down! My set up is the moment is myself on vocals, and my friends Hayden and Tim on keys/guitar/drums.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

To not overthink things and just run with how I feel. This was from my wonderful producer Stef.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

Ooooh! I think it would be 'Chameleon' by Pnau.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

'Begin Again' by Megan Washington.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

'Two Bodies Ft. Emma Louise' by Flight Facilities.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

I saw CXLOE at Howler. She was so great!

Tell us about the bands or people in the Melbourne music community that inspire you.

I love the Melbourne scene! Over the years I’ve really looked up to women like Courtney Barnett, Jen Cloher and Clare Bowditch. They’re super inspiring to me as humans.

What are your plans for 2019?

I’m working on a body of work which I hope to have out before the end of the year! I’ve got another single coming soon and lots of fun shows on the horizon!

Japanese Wallpaper

Melbourne, VIC

This year's Unearthed High winner Japanese Wallpaper has just released his brand new single, featuring Jesse Davidson. It follows on from outstanding collaborations with Wafia and Pepa Knight, but who else is on the 17 year-old's 'collaborator wishlist'? And what are his plans for the rest of 2014? Find out below...

Read Interview

What’s the first thing you’re gonna do when you turn 18?
Most likely just go and see some bands - not being able to get into venues is definitely the worst part of being underage.

Who’s on your collaborator wish-list?
Hmm… I think Bon Iver would be pretty beautiful, his voice is so superb. Phoebe (ex-Snakadaktal) would be awesome too.

On average, how much time do you spend in your bedroom making tunes each week?
I’m not sure how many hours but definitely a lot! It’s a great way to procrastinate and avoid schoolwork…

What’s your go-to snack when making music?
Definitely this frozen yoghurt ice-cream thing that Mum has started buying. It doesn’t last very long when I’m recording ;)

What’s your vision for the ultimate Japanese Wallpaper live show?
I’d love to make it a band-driven show at some point - I love playing in bands and I think that with a little tweaking the music would really lend itself to it.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
Hmm, 'Pickles From The Jar' by Courtney Barnett would be a pretty good one. Or maybe 'Void' by Seekae. Depends why they were crying in the first place I guess!

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
Sorry to use Seekae twice but their song 'You’ll' is a definite tearjerker. Works on me every time.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
That Polographia and Cosmo’s Midnight collab always goes down well! Or maybe an Andras Fox track. Depends on the party.

What are your plans for the rest 2014?
I definitely want to do some more touring and keep developing my show, so hopefully there will be plenty of time for that in the school holidays…

Meet this week's Feature Artist, EILISH GILLIGAN. She's just dropped perhaps the best pop track of 2018 so far!

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

I feel like my sound is still evolving and that maybe it’ll never stop evolving…and maybe I don’t want it to, either. It’s important to me to seek out something innovative, while still embracing the conventions of modern pop music, because pop music is my one true love!! I think I make Pop music, but Pop music that’s been like... plucked off the rings of Saturn, or dredged up from the bottom of the ocean. There’s something alien and spooky about it that I can’t stop chasing.

What's your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

Deeply human feelings and behaviour is the thing that truly inspires me to create, I think. I also love when those perfect poetic moments occur in real life - those things you could never dream of writing, but somehow the universe gifts them to you and it’s impossible not to frame them in a song. Like last year I was in America and I’d just said goodbye to someone I loved very much, and sitting in the back of an Uber, crying as though I was in a music video, Kissing Families by Silversun Pickups came on and it was just…perfect. It was so human and so miserable and I couldn’t believe my luck (lol).

What can punters expect from an EILISH GILLIGAN live show?

I think I put on a good show. It’s important to me to produce a true *performance* in every sense of the word. I love the drama involved in being onstage. I think if I’d had any tangible talent in the area I’d probably have gravitated towards acting. If I hadn’t been a musician. I’m really inspired by tearjerker films and also by the drag community. I think Lady Gaga said once “those women taught me how to serve,” which is the truest goddamn thing on this planet.

What's the best advice you've been given and who was it from?

There have been two instances where some extraordinarily pertinent advice has been given to me at exactly the right time. The first was from my wonderfully honest friend who, after patiently witnessing me bawl my eyes out on her hotel bed in Austin because I didn’t have the slightest idea where my sorry life was headed, said “You gotta do your own thing.” And I did. And she was right. The second bit of advice was from my Dad, who recently looked me straight in the eye and said “You must stop worrying. It’s going to kill you if you don’t,” and that scared me so much I must say I have really cut down on the worrying…

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

'Say Yes To Life' by Gang of Youths. This has worked for me approximately one trillion times. Also 'Better' by Mallrat.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

OK, this is definitely my forte. I think right now it’s a tie between 'Turning To White' by New Gods and 'Idiot Oracle' by Paul Dempsey. Both lyrically unbelievable and so so so miserable. Both superb!!

You're the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

'Get Me A Drink' by Alice Ivy, E^ST, Charlie Threads. Have you ever heard anything as unhingedly glorious as this song?!

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

The last one I can really remember was the Ceres Christmas show in December. It was my first time seeing Ceres live and it changed everything. I couldn’t believe the songs I had held so close to me so privately for so long meant so much to so many people in the same room!!

Tell us about the bands or people in the music community that inspire you.

I’m really inspired by kindness, honesty and work ethic in this industry. I really look up to people like HTMLflowers, Gordi and Mallrat. They all exude a wonderful sense of pride in their work and a generous, positive attitude towards friends and colleagues and I just think they’re great.

What are your plans for 2018?

Write heaps, hopefully play many shows, and embrace whatever it means to be completely vulnerably human as much and as often as possible.

Owen Rabbit is a multi-instrumentalist and producer out of Melbourne's northern suburbs. He plays rubbish, bottles and matches like instruments, anything he can find that makes a sound.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I got given a field recorder for my birthday by my parents when I was a teenager. I loved recording sounds from unusual places and I loved travelling. I used my field recorder through Morocco and the Southern Europe and started to place those samples in whatever beats I was making. Then I got a loop pedal and a microphone and tested out live sampling with whatever trinkets I could find. I love sounds. I love foley in films it really inspires me. I guess that mixed with my love of electronic music and jazz and soul mashes up into something like my music.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
When I write songs I can draw on personal experiences or anything that affects me on an emotional level. Sometimes I'll try put myself in other people's shoes and imagine what they're going through. I usually write music when I'm not near my instruments. I tend to think about little hooks, sounds or sometimes whole songs when I'm on the bus walking somewhere. Sometimes I even drift off when I'm talking to someone.

What can punters expect from an Owen Rabbit live show?
I build a piece of music layer by layer with my toys and rubbish. Then I play my synths and drum pads, my guitar and use my voice. Sometimes it's a little rough but it's because it's all happening right there.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
Lachlan Mitchell told me once to encourage myself to be sensitive. He said that there's all different kinds of people in the world and they all play an important part and contribute to helping human kind as a whole. And while usually those who are strong are celebrated for their stoicism, their sportsmanship or their abilities as leaders, humanity needs sensitive people just as much to help guide them through their dark times and show them they aren't alone.

I personally can't think of a better explanation for how and why people make art. That guy kinda blew my mind. He's an incredible musician.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
Dear Plastic, Kalacoma, Matt Kelly (Mayfair Kytes) at The Workers Club. It was incredible. My 3 favourite acts in Melbourne.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Melbourne music community that inspire you.
Hiatus Kaiyote are pretty undeniable. They're incredible. I supported Nai Palm for one of my first gigs, she's an incredible vocalist. I loved the raw energy of Mangelwurzel when I first saw them a few years ago. And the phronetic, surreal and impossibly complex Kalacoma have such an inspiring approach to live sound. They are a very much live electronic band. There's so much good music in Melbourne.

What are your plans for 2016?
I plan to release an EP early in the year. Then I'm going to Brighton, England for the Great Escape Festival and some shows in Europe. After that I'll be doing my first Australian headline tour and getting stuck into writing my debut album.
