Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

I started developing my sound by trying to re-create songs and styles that affected me when I was younger. Stevie Wonder, Pharrell, Moses Sumney, Mac Demarco, Dev Hynes, Dr Dre, and so many more influenced me to incorporate hip-hop soul jazz and rock into my music.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

Life experiences it sounds generic but I pull a lot of my inspiration from events in my life or in the lives of people around me besides that the music itself like chord progression and melodies inspire the tone and feel of all my music.

What can punters expect from a Stevan live show?

It’s next level I’m not hyping it up but I’ve got great band members who bring their own style to my music and elevate it to a different feel, all of my band members come from Jazz back grounds and it bleeds into the live set up plus we add whole sections to songs, I’m very keen on playing on of them

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

My Dad and it was simple but he told me to follow my heart and to do what I love, there have been moments when we haven’t seen eye to eye but even then he respects my passions and believe that I can do whatever I set my mind to that type of confidence he has in me makes me feel like I can,

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

'S.A. D.' by Kirin J Callinan.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

Probably still S. A. D. by Kirin J Callinan.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

Scott Green. Kids played that at every party in High School.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

I recently went to see Rejjie Snow at Metro theatre I went with some mates it was a really fun experience it was like my first time seeing a proper live rap show.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Illawarra music community that inspire you.

There aren’t a lot of people in Wollongong that are making music like mine but in Sydney Cosmo Midnight, Winston SurfShirt pretty much every artist on my Astro people, big shout out to Selasie Wussah and M.A.C they are Sydney artist who’ve supported me and kind of mentored me in my early days. My biggest inspiration in Australian music is actually from Brisbane his name is Rei So La trust me he’s the next big thing.

What are your plans for 2019?

Releasing more music I’ve got so much and I want to keep making more and showing my stuff to the people who want to hear it, I guess I’ll be playing more shows and meeting new artist I want to set myself up for bigger opportunities

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

I started making music at 15 years old. I just used to steal random beats online and just do little freestyles and make cd's and give them out to my friends at school. And back then as well, I don't know if anybody remembers, but when we had Bluetooth on the phones, I remember I used to make a song and put it on my phone and Bluetooth it to my friends and people ended up Bluetoothing it to other kids and other kids and one day I was at Blacktown station and I heard somebody playing my song. That's when I knew I was going to make music from here on.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

First time I got introduced to music was listening to Kanye West on the radio. I think that was when I was maybe 11, maybe 12. Me and my family were literally on the way home from church and I wasn't really allowed to listen to hip-hop because of the swearing and so on. So we all listened to gospel music and then one day, Kanye made this song called 'Jesus Walks' and when it came onto the radio, my parents let me listen to it. So from there on, I went on to become a big Kanye fan.

Tell us about your latest single 'My World'

'My World is about me being myself and not caring about what other people think.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
Our music is pretty diverse from song to song and it has taken us a long time to figure out the music that we really want to make. We listen to as much music as we can and spend a lot of time tinkering around on synths and whatever else we can get our hands on.

You’re one of the winners of our Laneway competition. What can the crowd at Laneway in Fremantle expect from the Crooked Colours live show?
Live drums, hard-synths and three sloppy rigs.

Who are some other Australian bands/artists that everyone should be checking out this year?
Oscar Key Sung, Deja, PALACE, Safia, Yeo…. ect. You can pretty much throw a stick in Australia and chances are its gonna land on a talented muso right now.

What are your plans for Crooked Colours in 2014?
A fresh EP and a butt load of touring! The first of which will be an Aus tour late February with stops in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

Australian music is…?
...hotter than a sausage sizzle at Bunnings on a Sunday!

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

Our music is a mix of psych, reggae and surf rock. Our sound has been developed over 6 years playing together in various garages and sheds in the beginning with a shift away from the garage aesthetic more recently.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

All the members have varied tastes and influences which give us a wide range of sounds to draw inspiration from. From classic rock to reggae to psychedelic, we love to mash all of our favourite sounds together.

What can punters expect from an Ocean Alley live show?

When we play live we always look forward to getting our energy from an involved crowd. We try to bring high energy playing and a cool looking vibe to the stage. If the crowd is having fun then we will be too.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

We haven't had many musical mentors since we formed but some old wise man once told us to write more ballads. There are a lot of timeless ballads out there.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

'Sounds of Then' by Gang Gajang will cheer you up.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

'Black Flies by Ben Howard will get you crying.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

'Love at First Sight' by Kylie Minogue will make you move.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

We played in Sydney last week at the Metro Theatre. They were the best shows we've played to date. We had so much fun on and off the stage. We also had some confetti filled balloons!

Tell us about the bands or people in the Sydney music community that inspire you.

We are inspired by all the up and coming bands that do the miles and put the effort in to make a name for themselves. It can be a hard and long slog to make it as a touring band, but if you're a nice person and easy to get along with you'll go far.

What are your plans for 2017?

We have lots of studio time booked before the end of the year to finish off our next record. Also heading across the ditch to New Zealand for some festivals over New Years.
