Dulcie

( )

Perth, WA

Perth super ladies Dulcie wow'd us with their debut single 'Fall' and we can't wait for you to hear it all this week on triple j Unearthed.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

I don’t think any of us quite know how we developed Dulcie to sound the way it does. It’s really been such a subconscious fusion of all of the music that the four of us have ever listened to or been inspired by individually. At any given time, any one of hundreds of potential influences could shine through and push our sound in another direction. Hopefully that will be something that people will continue to find interesting about listening to our music. At the moment we’re really exploring how to incorporate multiple-part harmonies and that's always been a pretty consistent idea for us all.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

Definitely each other and our personal and combined love for music. We all really egg each other on in rehearsal and write music together so I think it’s probably fair to say that our biggest inspiration is other musicians and the ability to inspire and collaborate with each other. Songs come together that much quicker when you’ve got three other people in the room getting hyped up over your ideas.

What can punters expect from a Dulcie live show?

You can definitely expect a few laughs, we don’t take ourselves too seriously on stage so punters can expect a bit of a giggle with/at us for sure! You can probably expect to have a bit of a dance and maybe some cheeky sing-a-longs and clapping on the beat too- we love that stuff!

What’s the best advice you've been given and who was it from?

As silly as it sounds, my mum has this frame full of motivational quotes hanging above our toilet at home and there is this one quote that says “Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.” I feel like this has always been a really important thing in reminding me to choose what I want to do because I love it rather than what will give the biggest instant reward. This whole philosophy has definitely helped more than one musician in my life to decide to either study music or commit their time to writing and making music, follow their dream because they love it and want to have the experience, not necessarily the money or the fancy degree. Touring and playing music is the biggest source of cool experiences and stories to tell so it’s pretty relevant to all of us.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

100% ‘Exactly How You Are’ by Ball Park Music. It’s got me smiling after the first sentence every single time, it is the most wonderful song and sometimes people need a little reminder that it’s okay to be who they are and they “don’t have to swim upstream”.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

That’s a tough one! We’re gonna have to go with Sawteeth by Spacey Jane. It’s just a beautiful song and you can’t help but shed a few tears to it. If you haven’t checked them out, prepare yourself for some of the most beautiful songwriting ever.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

Surely it would be a sin not to put on ‘Let It Happen’ by Tame Impala. Not sure about everyone else, but we’re never at a party that doesn’t get around a bit of a boogie to that huge tune.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

I think the last one was probably the Across The Road Music Festival in Bunbury (that’s down south, does that count?). We played a little festival down in Bunbury at the start of the month with a bunch of other Perth bands and it was SO FUN. Every single band or artist that performed killed it, there were little op shop stalls, food trucks, pop up bars and the whole thing was zero-waste. Basically it was everything you could ever ask for.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Perth music community that inspire you.

The list of people in Perth that inspire us goes on forever and ever. Within our little family at Across The Road Music there is a really inspiring space to create in. We have some great mates in some great Perth bands (Wooly Mammoth, Great Gable, Carla Geneve, Death By Denim, King Ibis, Lilia, Grace Armstrong- the list goes on). It’s always been a pleasure to play and hang out with everybody that we have had the chance to so far and there is certainly no lack of inspiration in the Perth music community.

What are your plans for 2019?

2019 is shaping up to be a big one! We’ll definitely be jumping into the studio and putting out some new music. Starting this week, we’re going on our first ever national tour with our good friends (and amazing Perth band) Great Gable so we’re all super keen for that! Every day things change and become bigger and more exciting so we’re keeping it pretty chilled out while we do this tour and hopefully over the next few weeks we’ll get a bit more of a detailed idea of what this year holds for us.

Get to know this week's triple j Unearthed Feature Artist, Sycco.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

I’d say Sycco (psycho) is maybe a blend of pop, neo-soul and psychedelia. I guess because I make everything myself the Sycco sound came from experimenting and blending different genre’s over the years. I’m still trying to work out what exactly it is to but I also don’t want be tied down to one specific genre and don’t think it has to!

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

I think the greatest source of inspiration would be that I don’t want to do anything other than music, there is nothing I love more than music, isn’t it just so great!

What can punters expect from a Sycco live show?

Colourful, vibrant, maybe a sensation of stank will overtake ur face in a good way?

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

Sometimes u just have to kick the can down the road - Co Star App. HA I think that has been the best advice I’ve been given.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

Probably like What Is Growing Up by Lime Cordiale, its just makes you feel so okay in my opinion.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

ye to Eye by Jordan Rakei for sure.. I’ve definitely cried to it - it’s quite a hectic song.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

Lay down - Touch Sensitive or Catch Your Breath by Blossom - probably both.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

I think the last one I went to was 30/70 in Brisbane, it was THAT good, my mind was blown.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Brissie music community that inspire you.

The Brissie music community is so amazing and supportive. Everyone backs everyone and everyone wants everyone to succeed. I could go on forever but Felivand, Asha Jefferies, Hallie, First Beige and Great Sage are some of the most talented humans on earth and they all deserve everything that is coming to them. Back your friends and your local scene because they are AMAZING.

What are your plans for 2019/2020?

I have a few more shows for the rest of the year. 2020 is going to be so EXHILARATING, releasing a lot more music and playing a lot more exciting shows!

Direct from Macmasters Beach, The Moving Stills are this week's Feature Artist!

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

Pool Party on the Moon vibes with lazer light beams and blow up flamingos, set in the 90s. We are often trying new things and shifting things to see what works etc. We've been listening to a lot of Beck and Jungle Giants, so we've been moving towards a bit more of that and playing around with Synths and Keys. We've all been mucking around with that in the last year or so which has put a new thread through everything.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

A bit of everything. We've all got day jobs and that experience makes its way into the songwriting and also drives us to make music. Those photos taken from behind the drummer/band looking out to a crowd at festival or the like, or hearing a song that connects with your emotions or taste really well is also pretty inspiring, but seeing a band live that really connects with you gives us huge drive. We just want to make music that'll have an impact with the people that listen to it.

What can punters expect from The Moving Stills live show?

A bit of hair, good pair of sunnies, a shaker or two... and maybe a few Flower T shirts in the crowd.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

Some of the best advice was from Ollie of Lime Cordiale, It was along the lines of, just to keep going and to keep at it. Feels like that’s been pretty key and will continue to follow that.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

Marinade by Dope Lemon or Feeding the Family by Spacey Jane are pretty uplifting tracks we think.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

Maybe So We Know By DMA’s or Seaweed by Hockey Dad, there’s a lot of heart in these tracks.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

Pizza Guy by Touch Sensitive

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

The last local gig we saw was Kim Churchill at The Rhythm Hut in Gosford, was a great vibe and he’s legend.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Central Coast music community that inspire you.

Everyone’s sort of chipping away doing their thing and when a gig is on it feels like you’ll see people from all different bands there. There’s been some cool bands/Artists from the Central Coast that have done some inspiring stuff like E^ST, Ninajirachi, Winterbourne and Something With Numbers to name a few.

What are your plans for 2020?

We are currently working on a bunch of tracks, looking to have an EP out around mid year and a single or two before hand. We are also heading out on a Co-headline Tour with our friends Teenage Dads through March and April which will be a heap of fun.

LOS SCALLYWAGGS

Mid North Coast, NSW

Coastal rockers LOS SCALLYWAGGS are the winners of our Festival Of The Sun competition and will be taking to the main stage in Port Macquarie this Saturday.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
We started out as a two piece (Joel and Nat) a couple of years ago playing sort of garage blues rock and we started listening to bands like Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees which then led us into a different direction with our music. Once Dale came along and jumped on the bass we all had this mega froth on garage punk and psychedelic rock n roll bands like these guys and whole bunch of other sick bands and started creating music that was a similar vibe. Now we are at a stage where our jams and recording sessions naturally have this garage fuzz rock n roll feel to it which we are super stoked with.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
When we are working or just all away from each other for a while we start getting super excited to play together and mess around with some new ideas. Also get a new guitar and that will inspire new music until the cows come home.

You’re the winners of our Festival Of The Sun competition. What can punters there expect from the LOS SCALLYWAGGS live show?
Expect the unexpected... and loud noises that make you want to pour beers on your mates, jump around and have a hell time.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
When you go to KFC don’t order potato and gravy with potato chips cos you are just gonna be dippin’ potato chips into potato dips mate (too much bloody potato). – Kurghy Jones, 2015

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
Boys Light Up – Australian Crawl
This will not only make you stop crying but also make you tuck your shirt in and start a furious boot skoot.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
Not Pretty Enough – Casey Chambers
This one gets us every time.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
Stayin’ Alive – The Bee Gees.
What else really?

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
The last local show we went to was one that we actually organised last month at the local club in Pacific Palms called ‘El Palmo Pacificano VI’. It was epic! We had seven local bands on the line-up which brought crew from everywhere. I guess it was a good excuse to drink beers and get loose with your 500 of your mates!

Tell us about the bands or people in your local music community that inspire you.
There is a whole bunch of local mad dogs around town but it hard to name all of them which inspire us because they all do. What inspires inspire us are the legends that go out of their way to come to shows and enjoy live music and create a good vibe and energy for themselves and else everyone around them. This inspires us to play more local shows and make bigger music events which can therefore showcase live local talent for these people to enjoy.

What are your plans for 2017?
For 2017 we would be super pumped to jump onto some more festival line-ups around Australia. We got a whole bunch of new songs so I reckon we will throw another full length album out early next year and organise a whole bunch of dates both locally and nationally which will be dope. Come along and melt your brains amigos!

Eliza & The Delusionals

( )

Melbourne, VIC

Brisbane showstoppers Eliza and The Delusionals explore all waves of life with their rock-pop nature, fun melodies and nostalgic lyrics. Get to know them! Their our Feature Artist all this week on triple j Unearthed.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

I think we really started to zone in on the sound of Eliza & The Delusionals after I saw Catfish & the Bottlemen supporting The Kooks a few years ago. Their album 'The Balcony' had a huge impact on the developnent of our music when we first started, and they have continued to inspire me with their second album. I always try to keep my artistic influences broad, and try to incorporate the inspiration from them into my songs.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

I find my greatest source of inspiration for making music through my life experiences growing up, and continuing to understand all aspects of the world. I always try to present my songs in a way that people can relate to and hopefully find insight through.

What can punters expect from a Eliza & The Delusionals live show?

I like to think that people can expect a really fun and high energy show. I really want the audience to feel that they're a part of a unifying experience rather than just watching us performing. I love feeling this when I go to shows, so I really try to bring that to our gigs!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

A lot of people have given me loads of great advice throughout my life but I don't think I can narrow it down to just one piece. I was actually stumped for ages on this question!

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

I'd have to say Polish Club's new track 'Come Party'. Who could feel sad listening to that tune?

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

Definitely 'Don't Let the Kids Win' by Julia Jacklin. It's such an emotional song and Julia is a profound songwriter.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

I'd probably put on Confidence Man's tune 'Boyfriend', because it's honestly a party in itself.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

I went and saw Bec Sandridge at The Foundry about a week or so ago, and it was great! I'm a huge fan of the 'Ridge. She was super friendly, and The Foundry is a really cool Brisbane venue.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Brisbane music community that inspire you.

I'm always inspired by seeing bands from Brisbane or the Gold Coast making an impact on Australia's music scene, like Cub Sport, The Belligerents and Amy Shark. It's so cool to watch musicians from your area release amazing music and get recognised for it across the country and the rest of the world!

What are your plans for 2017?

We have a bunch of plans for 2017, mainly including releasing new music (which will be happening very soon). Another big goal is to play some festivals! I love going to festivals and I've wanted to be a part of one for so long, so I'm hoping this year we can make our way onto some festival line-ups!

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I’ve been writing for a little while now, and I’ve listened to different genres ever since I can remember, so you could say its a culmination of everything that is me personally/musically. When I started taking music seriously, I’d be hella critical on what I was writing/recording, break it down and pin point what I needed to improve on. Hella straight forward BUT thats how I developed the bad boi.

You were one of the winners of our Listen Out competition and just played the festival in Brisbane. How was that experience?
It was crazy! I never imagined I'd play a festival like that - so it was a trip! I really enjoyed seeing Anderson .Paak, Travis Scott and A$AP Ferg throughout the day - but my favourite experience was just being on stage with my homies and being able to share that moment with them. That was just really special to me. Thank you so much.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
I make music and pursue music as a career for different reasons but they are equally as important to me and what drives ya boi Midas !!!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
I’ve been lucky enough to have had wise heads in my life so its hard to say, but what I’ve learnt most from the people I admire is how to treat people and I feel like that’s worth its weight in gold ;)

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
000000 - Midas.Gold. Who the F*k Kanye West tho?

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
UV boi فوق بنفسجي - If She, If He (ft. EASTGHOST)

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
Rockstar - Carmouflage Ro$e

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
Gill Bate$! skkkrrrrrrr!  He always holds it down super polished performer I’ve learned a lot from him!

Tell us about the bands or people in the Brisbane music community that inspire you.
Where to start?!?! There's too much talent here right now, (we hold the torch for hip-hop rn imo). There’s I AM D, Gill Bates, Gallu$, Carmoflauge Ro$e, Erik Sanders, Tides, LimeEyed, James Angus (Jangus), Astro Travellers and like 6-7 acts more that I can’t think of right now and they ALL inspire me to work harder. It’s kind of like that for everybody in BNE, it’s competitive fo sho but the vast majority respect each other. It’s dope that cats are on the same wave length tryna build something, that inspires me.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016 and in to 2017?
I tour with Tkay Maidza in NOV!!!!! I also release my EP in OCT, a few more visuals and I’ve got a few features with some talented artists from around AUS :) maybe a couple more sneaky drops here n there ;)

Developing our sound was pretty much a trial and error situation where we would write songs, test them live and then fix the parts or get rid of the songs that we weren't happy with.  We have transformed the pool room in Mike's parents' house into WHARVES HQ where we write, record and rehearse.

Mikes dad is annoyed that he has lost the use of his beloved pool table that he never used, but it was a sacrifice we were willing to make. Steven Schram has produced our last two singles and we have certainly gained a lot from working with him.

What's your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

We are all huge fans of music. Watching bands smashing it out on stage or listening to an awesome album makes us want to do the same.

What can punters expect from a WHARVES live show?

Four sweaty dudes on stage, bouncing around like a beach ball at a Nickelback concert.

What's the best advice you've been given and who was it from?

We supported Polish Club in Byron Bay and we had a few beers with them before the show. They were telling us to always work with people that really care about your music and are passionate about what you do (makes sense, right?).  Top blokes.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

Bad//Dreems and their track 'Feeling Remains'. If this doesn't get you jacked up, then you must be a robot.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and their track, 'Into My Arms'. Shares in Kleenex must have skyrocketed when this song came out.

You're the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

Luke Million and his track 'Arnie'. We lose our biscuits when this banger comes on. An absolute must have in any party mix. P.S. Matt has a mad party mix - it's on Spotify if you wanna check it out. We're looking forward to checking his set out at Splendour!

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

We went and saw Tora, Mookhi and Angie Hudson at the Northern in Byron Bay a couple of weeks ago. Huge lineup and that light show was lit! There were more lasers than the 'Lasers Only' mode on GoldenEye '64.

Tell us about the bands or people in the North Coast, NSW music community that inspire you.

Mario from our local record store in Byron Bay, Howl and Moan Records, is really creating a music scene in the local area. We've played and been to gigs at his shop and it's always an awesome vibe.  Plus, we always walk out with a new vinyl!

We are also really lucky to live in an area that has some seriously amazing festivals such as Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival and Blues Fest. How could you not be inspired seeing your favourite band thrash it out to thousands of people?

What are your plans for 2017?

We've actually got some new music being released very soon as well as a tour, which we're really looking forward to. We have a couple more exciting things on the horizon but they're more secretive than Mr Krabs' Krabby Patty recipe.

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

My earliest influences came from the soul and blues my mother played around the house when I was a kid – Aretha Franklin, The Bee Gees and the Doobie Brothers were on regular rotation. From there, I learned to play the cello for 6 years, and I first discovered hip hop when my cousin handed me Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor record when I was 12. From there, I studied the greats like Nas, Slick Rick and A Tribe Called Quest, and artists like these really instilled my old school style early on.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

My experiences in life. Music’s an outlet for me to voice my journey in trying to figure out life and grow in myself, and I love being able to share what I encounter along the way through my music. Hip hop holds the unique ability to tell stories in a deeply authentic way, so I always hope to have my music reflect this.

What can punters expect from a Kirklandd live show?

A very, very big vibe. My live set’s become this cool blend of hype and intimate storytelling, and this is how I most love connecting with people: through good energies and sharing my experiences with the audience before me. My drummer Josh and I have really levelled up our performance routine for the Impulse tour, and especially our GTM set this weekend – I can’t wait to show Canberra the surprises we have in store.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

I can’t remember who said this to me, but to always enjoy the process. Immerse yourself in the experience of creating, find fulfilment in the process, and thrive in the journey to finishing it. Everything will follow from there.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

WUTD’ by Genesis Owusu. WUTD? Cry, or boogie?

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

Waiting’ by KIAN. Those chords are really beautiful man.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

Compliment My Shirt’ by Saint Lane. That’s the g right there.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

The last show I went to was around a week back in Sydney. I went to do a short performance of some unreleased music I have coming with a good homie of mine, Francoistunes, at a One Day Party that Kaiit was headlining in Marrickville. The vibe was so strong. I love the live culture the One Day crew have built. Kaiit is one of the warmest, most genuine performers ever, and seeing everyone turn up for her was awesome. And she has the coolest rider on the planet.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Canberra music community that inspire you.

All of them; bands, creatives and all members of our community. The mutual support between artists and creatives in our city is incredible, and we’re constantly pushing each other to go further and create the best art we can. It’s the best feeling knowing if one of us is winning, all of us are, and we’re all forming Canberra’s musical identity in the process. It’s a crazy exciting time for our city and I’m blessed to be a part of it.

What are your plans for 2019?

This week we’re kicking off the Impulse tour with Groovin the Moo as our first date. Then we’re hitting Melbourne and Sydney for the first time in a long while, with Zellow supporting us nationally, and I can’t wait to bring the live experience of Impulse to our Sydney and Melbourne family. From there, I’m diving back in the studio with Cam to finish the follow up to Impulse, which I’m hoping will be my strongest single yet. A lot more music is yet to come this year and I’m wildly excited to share where my sound is heading.

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

We played around with a bunch of different sounds to start with. We always knew we loved writing pop melodies but also loved the heavy dance electronic drops as well. We aimed to find a balance without it sounding too disjointed or like a remix/club track. It took us a while to blend the two styles together, which is why our first tracks were a little slower and not as heavy as compared to the tracks we play in our DJ sets. We also love the African/Reggaeton beats too, so we wanted to incorporate that as well. The music we are working on at the moment is more similar to the style we love to play in our DJ sets.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

Obviously other artists we look up to inspire and influence us with our music. A lot of the time however we are influenced by a story we read or hear that touches us and then inspires us to write a song. For example, Sav will be talking about a friend’s experience or story and Briony will butt in and say "hey that's a cool line you just said- let’s use that in a song!" At other times we draw on personal experiences. Sometimes we listen to and play around with different world music genres. For example we are inspired by instruments and sounds from African and Brazilian music.

What can punters expect from a Kinder live show?

Lots of energy and dancing. We will be singing all of our originals live! (and a sneaky cover) in addition to playing our staple heavy house Brazilian Bass DJ set.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

Recently when we were going through a low period, our talented and dear friend Dylan Joel advised, "You have to learn to be ok with the ups and downs of the music industry and understand it's never going to be a smooth ride. You have to self talk when you're feeling down and realise the roller coaster is always going to go up and down no matter how successful you are in the industry. You just have to remember the reason why you started doing music in the first place and not let the opinions of others reflect your love for music and keep going with it".

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

Bag Raiders with 'Shooting Stars'. Lifts us up whenever we are feeling in the dumps.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

'Am I Not Pretty Enough' by Kasey Chambers.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

At the moment, along with most DJs our go to is the ‘ol classic, 'LOOOOSING IT' by Fisher.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

Sav saw our good friend Ivan Ooze perform at the Landsdown in Sydney recently. It was rowdy, sweaty and a bunch of good fun! He is super talented!

Tell us about the bands or people in the Sydney music community that inspire you.

A lot of the female songwriters coming out of Sydney are insanely talented and really inspire us! CXLOE, Graace, Kota Banks and Xira are so incredible at their craft. Two talented producers we have worked with, Tasker and Xavier Dunn, are also a major inspiration. They can produce a wide range of music and we love working with them. We are also super inspired by Sydney legends Golden Features and Hayden James. We secretly refer to Golden Features as “father” lol.
